History of Zero electric motorcycles
Zero Motorcycles was founded in Santa Cruz, California in 2006 under the name ‘Electricross’ by Neal Saiki. He is an aircraft technician and enthusiastic motorcyclist. Since 2012, the brand has been launching new models on the market every year and although the share of electrically powered motorcycles worldwide is still low, Zero is the world market leader. Zero motorcycles are equipped with a self-developed electric motor, the Z-force. It is a motor without gears so that torque can be transferred to the drive at any time without loss of power.
Why ride a Zero?
Zero Motocycles celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2016. To mark the occasion, a special 10th Anniversary edition was released at a competitive price. ‘What's more, we will pay all new owners the cost of couplings, oil filters, spark plugs and oil changes for your new Zero for its entire lifespan,’ joked Zero's Chief Technology Officer. A nice offer when you consider that Zero motorcycles do not have a clutch, spark plugs or oil. At Zero they believe that, just as with cars, the petrol engine will eventually disappear from the streets.
Riding a Zero
Switching to electric vehicles undeniably has a number of advantages. You never have to fill up with petrol again, maintenance on the drive is kept to a minimum and the acceleration of a Zero motorcycle is phenomenal. The most modern Zeros, in combination with a Power Tank, have a range of 359 kilometres in the city (approximately 180 kilometres on the motorway). On average, motorcyclists do not ride more than 10,000 kilometres per year, which is 30 kilometres per day. The Zero consumes about 2 cents per kilometre travelled.
That's why a Zero
The key word with an electric motor is torque. It's about Newton metres and not horsepower. The power of the Zero motorcycle's motor (the Z-force) is immediately available when you open the throttle. There is no need to rev up the engine. With no engine noise and no smell of oil and petrol, you are always first away at the traffic lights on your Zero.
Zero S and DS
These were the first production engines to come on the market in 2012 and could travel more than 100 miles on a single battery charge.
Zero FX
With the Zero FX you can handle any terrain. The Z-force drivetrain, long suspension travel and dual sport functions ensure that you can also ride this Zero on forest trails.
Zero SR
The SR comes in various models, including the top-of-the-line SF/F model. This model has a torque of 190 Nm. By comparison, a superbike like the Ducati Panigale V4 has a torque of 144 Nm (at 10,000 rpm!).
