The weather in Europe isn’t always ideal to ride a motorcycle. Sometimes it’s too hot, or it’s too cold. And it rains often. Riding a motorcycle in the rain can be tricky. Do you expect rainfall during your trip? Better prepare yourself on forehand. We give you some tips for riding a motorcycle in the rain.
Waterproof motorcycle clothing
No one enjoys riding a motorcycle with a soaked motorcycle suit. Remember to take a nylon jacket, pair of pants or rain overall with you, especially when you wear a leather suit. Put this waterproof clothing on when you see dark clouds coming, so before it starts to rain. This way you won’t have to wrestle your motorcycle boots trough the trouser legs. Choose the right size when buying waterproof motorcycle clothing. You don’t want fluttering clothes when riding down the highway.
Motorcycling on slippery roads
Wet roads aren’t necessarily slippery. Do keep in mind that your braking distance increases on wet roads. So keep an eye on your speedometer. Roads do get slippery when it hasn’t rained for quite some time and it suddenly starts to pour. Dirt and oil that mix with water can become a treacherous substance. You can recognize this substance by the visible formation of foam on the road. It’s often found at traffic lights. So be extra careful with braking when you see foam on the road.
Bad visibility while riding
Roads are less visible when motorcycling in rain. Tar which was used for road reparations can become real slippery. Combine that with the bad visibility when it pours and you can get yourself in a tricky situation. Try to keep the throttle steady when you ride on a piece of tar and you start to slip a bit. Don’t get spooked and hit the brakes all of sudden. White road markers are also less visible when it rains heavily. Try to avoid these markers when riding a motorcycle in the rain, especially in corners.
An extra tip; keep your visor clean. A dirty visor or irregularities prevent rain from running off the visor. In low light conditions light beams from cars and lanterns can get shattered by those irregularities and rain drops that stick to the visor. Your eyes won’t be happy. Use Turtlewax to clean your visor every now and then.
