Would you like to experience what it's like to ride a Triumph? Riding a Triumph is not just riding a motorcycle. When you ride a Bonneville, Thruxton, Daytona or Speed Triple you are making a statement. You are headstrong, proud and you love tradition. The brand is over 100 years old and after a number of years of absence, it has been making very appealing motorcycles with a unique design and proven technology since 1991.
History of TRIUMPH motorcycles
The motorcycle brand has had a turbulent history. The first Triumph motorcycle – a reinforced bicycle with a 3 hp engine – was built in 1902. The big breakthrough came with the order from the English army during the First World War. Triumph then built no fewer than 57,000 type ‘H’ motorcycles, a 550cc motorcycle with a modern gearbox. In 1937, it built the Speed Twin, a motorcycle with a top speed of over 90mph. This was the motorcycle engine that would form the basis for the next 40 years. In 1955, Triumph built a motorcycle that reached a speed of over 193 mph on the Bonneville salt flats. The brand held this speed record for over 15 years.
However, in the 1970s the brand could not compete with the low prices and good technology of Japanese motorcycles and in 1983 Triumph Motorcycles went bankrupt. The trademark rights were bought by John Bloor and with a huge investment he managed to launch no fewer than six new models in 1991. The models were developed further in the years that followed and Triumph became one of the leading brands in the field of design and technology. Today, the brand sells more than 130,000 motorcycles worldwide every year.
Why ride a Triumph?
If you ask the owners why they chose this brand, you get different answers. We have summarised the most frequently mentioned reasons below:
Legendary
It is a legendary motorcycle brand. British motorcycles also play a role in countless Hollywood films such as The Great Escape, in which Steve McQueen rides a TR6, or Mission Impossible 2, in which Tom Cruise escapes from the bad guys on a Speed Triple.
Technique
Triumph takes the long view when it comes to its technology. No gadgets or short-lived trends, but proven technology that is constantly being developed and improved.
Design
In recent years, Triumph has brought unique, iconic models to the market. With the Speed Triple, they have set the trend in the field of naked bikes, and with the new editions of the Bonneville, Scrambler and the Thruxton, Triumph is bringing true ‘modern classics’ to the market.
Popular Triumph models
A Triumph is no ordinary motorcycle. The history of this illustrious British motorcycle brand radiates from every model. A Triumph stands for freedom, tradition and craftsmanship.
The brand currently builds twelve types of motorcycles. From classic to modern and from practical commuter bikes to real lifestyle models for the weekend. But you also regularly see the - often well-maintained - motorcycles from the 1970s on the road!
In the 1960s, the brand built a number of iconic models, some of which have now been marketed as modern classics. Whether you want to speed along the motorway, cruise along the boulevard or prefer to leave the main roads behind you, nowadays there is a Triumph for every type of motorcyclist.
We have listed the three well-known Triumph models.
Bonneville
The original Triumph Bonneville was a motorcycle with a 650cc 2-cylinder engine and was built between 1959 and 1974. This popular motorcycle was known as the ‘Bonnie’. In 2001, an entirely new Bonneville was introduced: the Bonneville 800. The iconic styling has been preserved, but the latest technology has been applied. Yet the new Bonneville motorcycles are relatively easy to maintain and easy for anyone to handle. You can also customise a Bonneville to your own taste with, for example, the saddle, the exhaust system, special paint, striping, etc.
Speed Triple
The first Triumph Speed Triple was launched in 1994. With its cool and daring design and powerful three-cylinder engine, Triumph created a cross between a streetfighter and a café racer. It was a hit. The fifth generation of this successful motorcycle is now in the showroom.
Tiger
In 2011, Triumph introduced the Tiger, a motorcycle in the popular all-road class; the Tiger 800. In 2012, a very heavy all-road model appeared, the 1200 cc Tiger Explorer. This is the first Triumph with shaft drive and is packed with technology that allows the motorcycle to perform excellently on any terrain. The Tiger Explorer is the main competitor for the BMW R 1200 GS.
