Are you a fan of exclusive road motorcycles? Then KTM might be the brand for you. Although the Austrian brand is best known for its off-road motorcycles, it now also produces beautiful road motorcycles. In recent years, KTM has been one of the best-selling motorcycle brands in Europe.

    History of KTM motorcycles

KTM is an Austrian motorcycle brand that was founded by Hans Trunkenpolz. KTM initially stood for Kraftfahrzeuge Trunkenpolz Mattighofen. In 1953, motorbike enthusiast and businessman Ernst Kronreif became a shareholder in the company and the abbreviation stood for Kronreif Trunkenpolz Mattighofen.

The first motorcycle was built in 1949: the KTM 100L. From 1953 – after the arrival of Kronreif – KTM became successful in building and selling mopeds, motor scooters and light motorcycles up to 147cc. In the years that followed, KTM developed into a manufacturer of powerful off-road motorcycles that achieved great success in competitions in the 70s and 80s.

KTM went bankrupt in 1991 and the company was split up into several parts, including KTM Sportmotorcycles GmbH. This division brought the KTM Duke onto the market in 1994. This was the first KTM machine that was also suitable for public roads and became a sales success. Today, KTM is one of the world's most important producers of off-road motorcycles, both two-stroke and four-stroke engines.

    Why ride a KTM?

If you ask KTM riders why they chose this brand, you get different answers. We have listed the most frequently mentioned reasons:

    Looks

The lines of the new generation of KTM motorcycles are sleek and angular. They have a very futuristic but above all timeless appearance. You will always turn heads on a KTM.

    Choice of models

The fact that KTM is one of the best-selling motorcycle brands in Europe is certainly due in part to the introduction of the Duke. This ‘hooligan among motorcycles’ is available as an entry-level model for the phased motorcycle licence (125 and 390 Duke), as Duke 690 and 690 R and 1290 Super Duke R.

    Sound

The hollow, heavy drumming of the KTM exhaust is the most beautiful sound on earth for the enthusiast. Many KTMs have an aftermarket exhaust that not only looks better, but also produces an even more beautiful sound.

    Popular KTM models

This Austrian motorcycle brand has earned its spurs in motocross and has only been active in the Netherlands with road motorcycles since 2000. KTM makes no concessions. It is not without reason that KTM's slogan is: Ready to Race! The motorcycles are built for performance and are made with the best materials. The aggressive design and striking colours (orange!) make the new KTMs highly recognisable on the road.

The motorcycle press is wildly enthusiastic about the various KTM models. As far as many journalists are concerned, KTM is setting the new standard for naked bikes.

KTM has launched a modest number of models in recent years. Almost every year, existing models are released in an improved version. For example, the popular Duke is already in its fourth generation. We will list three of the most well-known KTM models.

    Duke

The single-cylinder Duke was built from 1994 to 1997, the Duke II from 1999 to 2006 and in the spring of 2008 the 690 Duke (unofficially the Duke III) was released. The Duke was the answer to the increased demand for Supermotos and was put together using parts from tried and tested off-road models. The 690 Duke is a sprinter of the purest water. The motorcycle weighs less than 150 kilos and the 70 hp strong motor is – once you leave the motorway – invincible. Accelerating, braking, stopping, stepping on the gas, taking your foot off the gas, steering, roaring along... riding the Duke is a blast!

    Adventure

The KTM 1190 Adventure appeared at Dutch dealers in 2012 and is based on the 950 Adventure with which Meoni won the Dakar Rally in 2002. For many motorcycle enthusiasts this is the ultimate motorcycle. Not only an all-road, but also a thoroughbred sports motorcycle. Unlike the BMW R1200GS and the Yamaha XT1200Z Super Ténéré, the 1190 Adventure has a chain drive and no cardan shaft.

The reason? KTM always goes for performance and the chain weighs less, which means less power loss. In addition, the KTM has 150 hp more than the BMW and 25 hp more than the Yamaha!

    690 SMC R

A relatively rare sight on Dutch roads, but a wonderful motorcycle: the KTM 690 SMC R. KTM focused on performance when building this motorcycle. The motorcycle weighs just 140.5 kilos and has an extremely strong single-cylinder engine with 67 hp. Race-ready, suitable for everyday use, with a fantastic design and state-of-the-art technology.
