Germany and the Netherlands, the Ducati Monster is a real sales hit
History of Ducati motorcycles
Adriano Ducati was a brilliant physics student from Bologna who succeeded in establishing a radio connection between Italy and America in 1924 using short wave. Together with his father and brothers Bruno and Marello, he started the Ducati Radio Company in 1926. This became a success and in the 1930s the Ducati factory became the largest manufacturer of technical components in Italy. The factory was severely damaged by bombing during the Second World War.
Immediately after the war, the Italian government took over the factory and began producing motorcycles there. The first Ducatis (the 48 cc four-stroke Cucciolo) rolled off the production line in 1946. In the 1950s, Ducati successfully participated in Grand Prix races. This made the brand very popular, especially in Italy, and the number of models grew rapidly. It was also during this period that Ducati invented the desmodromic valve control system. The Ducati Scrambler, which was introduced in the 1960s, is still Italy's best-selling motorcycle. Ducati also remained successful on the racetrack in the 1980s and 1990s, including in the superbike class.
Why ride a Ducati?
If you ask Ducati riders why they chose this brand, you get different answers. We have listed the most frequently mentioned reasons:
Beautiful
A DUCATI motorcycle is beautiful. Enthusiasts appreciate the lines, the details and curves. Ducatis have a ‘bella figura’ that, according to enthusiasts, becomes more and more beautiful the longer you look at it ...
Technology
DUCATI makes powerful motorcycles with sophisticated technology, often derived from things that have proven their strength on the racetrack. For example, the Panigale S features the Ducati Quick Shift (DQS), which originated in racing. This allows you to shift gears at lightning speed without having to clutch.
Road holding, power and sound
Many Ducati fans are in love with the sharp handling and raw power of their motorbike. Ducati is also the brand of the dry plate clutch that gives the Italian thoroughbred its characteristic sound.
Popular Ducati models
In 2016, Ducati officially celebrated 90 years of building motorcycles. Ducati is a proud Italian brand, even though it was taken over by Audi in 2012. They are proud of the sleek and seductive design of their motorcycles, the unique steel tube frame and the desmodromic valve control system. Add to that the brand's legendary victories on the GP circuit and the unique sound of Ducati and you know why Ducati has so many fans worldwide.
True Ducati fans call themselves Ducatists. They are united worldwide in the Desmo Owners Clubs and they meet to share their ‘red passion’ on the circuit, at events and during World Ducati Week.
Ducati builds motorcycles for enthusiasts. Passion is the keyword that connects Ducati fans. They are in love with the lines of their ‘Duc’. They know they are not riding an ordinary motorcycle and get all the attention when they park their often bright red motorcycle near a sidewalk café. Ducati has produced a large number of models over the past 90 years. They are known for their sports bikes, but with the Monster they have produced one of the best-selling motorcycles in the world. From the range of Ducati models, we have chosen the three most famous Ducati models.
Monster
The first Ducati Monster appeared in 1993 and since then more than 130,000 have been sold. The model stood out mainly due to its simple, flowing lines. The Monster is the textbook example of the ‘naked bike’. It has everything you need: a tank, motor, saddle, two wheels and a handlebar. Ducati Monsters are still being made. There are now versions with 400 to 1100 cc.
Multistrada
The Ducati Multistrada is a beautiful cross between a sports bike and an off-roader. It is a multifunctional motorcycle for riders who want to ride comfortably but also enjoy a sporty and challenging ride.
Desmosedici
The Ducati Desmosedici was originally a MotoGP racing bike. It has been in production since 2003 and in 2004 it set the unofficial speed record with a speed of 347.5 km/h. The famous driver Valentino Rossi rode this motorcycle in 2011 and 2013. The Desmosedici RR is a replica of the GP version that you are allowed to ride on public roads. It was made in 2008 in an edition of 1500.
