MotoShare restarts
On 21 December 2023, MotoShare went bankrupt. CEO and owner Daan van der Wal is proud to announce that the motorcycle rental platform has been relaunched. From 1 February 2024, motorcycles can once again be rented and hired out via MotoShare. As a motorbike enthusiast, this means that you can continue to use MotoShare in the familiar way.
Fast-growing start-up
MotoShare started at the beginning of 2016 as the peer-to-peer rental platform for motorbike enthusiasts and it proved to be a hit. A growing number of renters and landlords discovered the platform. The community grew rapidly with many users. From 2020, the platform was available to professional landlords as well as private ones. MotoShare started a strategic collaboration with a large number of motorcycle companies, importers and manufacturers.
Roll-out abroad leads to bankruptcy
Motivated by the results in the Netherlands, MotoShare also started renting out motorbikes in Spain and France in 2020. The costs for the roll-out and marketing abroad proved high and the volume in rental income failed to materialise. The expenses for the international expansion weighed heavily on the results of the activities in the Netherlands and shortly before Christmas 2023 bankruptcy appeared inevitable.
Restart is a fact
Daan van der Wal found it difficult to accept that the company, which was doing very well in the Netherlands, would disappear: ‘In recent weeks, there has been an enormous amount of support from the community and partners to work on a relaunch. In consultation with the curator, the relaunch became a reality on 19 January 2024.’
Focus on the Netherlands
MotoShare has a strong following in the Netherlands. Daan van der Wal says: ‘In 2023, almost 10,000 motorcyclists rented a motorcycle from one of the more than 1,500 private or more than 70 affiliated Dutch motorcycle shops. An excellent basis for healthy business operations and continuity for the future.’
Rental starts on 1 February
Private and professional landlords, as well as essential partners such as Combi Motors Verzekeringen, are supporting the relaunch. From 1 February, it will once again be possible to rent or hire a motorbike via MotoShare.nl, so that motorbike enthusiasts can continue to use MotoShare's services in the usual way.
Daan van der Wal: ‘In 2024, the focus will be entirely on the Dutch market, personal service and strong promotion of the affiliated partners. The time, money and energy spent in previous years on international expansion and attracting investment can now be spent on operations in the Netherlands, which will certainly benefit MotoShare.’
Financial security
The MotoShare team did not have to use outside capital to make the relaunch possible. This is a situation that will greatly promote continuity. Rental income ends up in a trust account of PayAut, which is licensed by the Dutch Central Bank. This partner ensures that - after the rental period - the payment is made to the landlord (both private and business), the insurer and MotoShare. In this way, MotoShare ensures that the landlord's income is always safe.
A confident future
The team behind MotoShare is looking forward to a fantastic motorbike season. We invite all motorbike enthusiasts to use MotoShare and enjoy a carefree and safe way of renting and hiring motorbikes.
